INDIANAPOLIS - The storyline seemed almost too perfect for Cathedral with about a minute left at Warren Central Friday night.

Down 14 points, then scoring 21 unanswered in the second half, and it seemed as if another No. 1 would go down at the hands of the Irish.

Then came snap that bounded from the hands of Cathedral's Kofi Hughes, and into the hands of a Warrior defender. Shakir Bell then put in the two point conversion, and then Warren Central recovered the onside kick.

"To be honest I don't know, lazy, I wasn't doing what I should have been doing, but it was all my fault," said Hughes of the fumble, which led to the crazy set of events to follow.

But Hughes efforts in the second half, which included a TD run and throw, were upheld by the Irish defense, who stopped John Hart and the Warriors to preserve the 35-32 win Friday Night.

"That was crazy as I don't know what," said Hughes of the bizarre ending. "Our defense they work so hard, they got it done for us today."

But they wouldn't have been in that position if not for the offense which Hughes led down the field often after Warren Central took a 21-7 lead in the first half. Down by 10 at the half, Hughes threw a touchdown pass to Stevie Wilson to cut the Warrior lead down to three. A touchdown sneak by the quarterback gave Cathedral its first lead of the game at 28-24 and then another touchdown run by Nick Najem in the fourth made it 35-24.

"Everybody's head was all over the place," said Hughes of the early offense. "We really slowed things down, and did things well, and that's how we got our big plays."

An interception by the Irish's Wes Vasillo with three minutes left appeared to end the hopes of Warren Central, who were held scoreless for most of the second half until Hughes' fumble created the drama at the end.

"Warren Central, a tremendous program, not going away, their not gonna quit they're not gonna die," said Cathedral head coach Rick Streiff. "We though we had them on the ropes, but they were making plays."
