The Carmel High School football practice was over with. The athletes took off their helmets, placed their pads on the ground, and it all seemed like the team was ready to go home.

That was until the athletes were ordered to stand at the far west goal line, run six 60-yard sprints down and back, perform a series of push-ups, and then capped off the afternoon workout with a number of crunches. Now practice was over for the team that came just four points shy last November of defeating Center Grove for a seventh state championship.

Coach Mo Moriarity believes it's this team's dedication to hard work in the off-season that will produce results in the upcoming months.

"One thing I like about this team is it's a very dedicated group," said Moriarity. "We probably averaged 125 per workout this summer. We worked out at 6:00 a.m. in the morning, so that says a lot about their character that they're up."

The Cougars have one very big question mark heading into the season, as the team lost their quarterback and Mr. Football Morgan Newton to graduation.

"Well obviously we feel like Morgan was one of the best players in the country, not just the state of Indiana. Obviously I don't know if you can replace kids like that, but we like our quarterbacks," said Moriarity. "We have a senior in Adam Schaefer and a junior in Scott Stillson who are both battling for the position right now, and we feel confident about either one of those kids. We feel like whoever it is can do a good job for us."

Carmel kicks off their schedule on August 21st when they host Indianapolis Cathedral.
