Barr-Reeve was the top-ranked team in Class A Girls entering the 2009 State Tournament. However, as the great Rudy Tomjanovich once said, never underestimate the heart of a champion.
The reigning state champions Marquette Catholic met Barr-Reeve in the semi-finals round Saturday morning, and it had looked as if the Blazers were on the verge of being stripped of their title. But the Blazers fought back and took the next three, setting the Blazers' sights on a sixth straight championship title.
"I think when we beat Barr-Reeve" said Ashley Edmond on when she knew her team would win the state championship. "That's an exciting match, there was some smack talk back and forth, and I think it just pumped us up to win."
Marquette Catholic (34-6) steam-rolled through the championship match by defeating Wes-Del 4-1 (25-18, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19).
"This is a very special group of girls," said Marquette Head Coach Troy Campbell. "This is our sixth championship in a row and it doesn't get any less exciting. The semi-final match was fantastic, and the finals match was equally as fantastic. Wes-Del is a very good team."
