AVON - So many had heard before Friday night, yet only one had lived it

"I might be the only guy on the field that remembers it," said Brownsburg head coach Brett Comer of the 1985 Bulldogs football season.

He was on the field instead of the sidelines on a sectional final night in November 24 years ago, helping the school to win that game and their second consecutive state championship.

Since that season, luck had dried up on the gridiron for Brownsburg, that is until 2009.

"At halftime we talked to our kids about how they've waited for it for a while," said Comer of a sectional championship-which they had a chance to win on Friday Night on Avon. "And I've waited a long time and so have a lot of other people."

Luckily for those who weren't even alive in 1985 were impatient as well, as the Bulldogs raced out to a 28-0 lead to take the Orioles out of the game, and deliver that elusive sectional crown with a 42-14 win.

"We haven't even been to the sectional championship game in 10 years," said Brownsburg Quarterback Robby Robbins. "We've been through so much together, and its really come together, and we can see that now."

Robbins had a big part to do in that, rushing for three first half touchdowns to give Brownsburg the early lead. In the third, the senior hit Levi Roach on a screen pass, which took and weaved his way across the field for a 28-yard touchdown that made it a four-touchdown lead.

Another touchdown rush in the fourth quarter gave Robbins four for the game, the culmination of years of work by the quarterback and Comer to build an offense suited to the Bulldogs player's strengths.

"Robby's getting a little better at it that's for sure," said Comer of Robbins and his role in the offense. "He's really progressed from the beginning of the year until now and Darryl running the ball is tough and you've got to give credit to the guys blocking up front too."

Spread the praise to the defense as well, who held a athlete-loaded Avon offense to zero points for just over three quarters on Friday night, never allowing quarterback Samuel Wulle or running back Taje Hill to get any momentum.

"We knew if they stayed around it was gonna be a good ball game but if we shut them down early, then we could win," said Brownsburg linebacker Darryl Jordan of the Bulldogs' defense.
