FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - When he walked in, at least a few stylists did a double-take.

Cara Kendall did that, and maybe even another.

"I saw just a big mess of hair and I knew my work was cut out for me," said the hair stylist from Tyler Mason Salon and Spa in Indianapolis.

It was her job to try and find a way to fix up this person's hair before perhaps the biggest moment in his professional life, one that's been overdue.

Well, actually, way overdue, and way late too.

"I was thinking about it," said Jamie Silva, who arrived at the Salon around noon on January 31st. "The last time I've been to a salon or a barber was 2003."

That was the response Kendall got as well as she prepared to work on the Colts safety, making him look good before his trip to South Florida and Super Bowl XLI.

"My cuts usually take me about a half-and-hour," said Kendall, but today she was about to triple that.

There was an hour spent at the sink, trying to get years of knots and snarls out of the hair with a battery of conditioners that attempted to loosen things up. That was followed by 45 minutes at the chair, as brushing and cutting commenced.

All of that coming despite the fact that Silva's wife, Theresa, spent almost an hour before the treatment trying to brush some of the bad hair away herself. When it finally came to an end just after 1:45 P.M., however, the work seemed to pay off.

"Everyone was happy, he was happy, so I'm happy," said Kendall, especially Silva.

The treatment gave his hair a bit of a refresher, but with just four inches cut off, the second-year safety and special teams player was able to keep a style that's been his trademark in his short time in Indianapolis.

"In high school I had it long and once during college I shaved it off myself," said Silva of his hair, but that was the last time.

He finished up his career at Boston College with the long locks, ending his senior season with 125 tackles and eight interception while being named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award for the nation's top defensive back. The consensus first team All-American then joined the Colts as a free agent, making the squad a special teams player in 2008 and then making the roster again in 2009.

All the while, the hair has remained.

"I've had it long for so long that you know I'm used to it," said Silva. "I did think about cutting it off but I'm glad I didn't. I'm glad I kept it long for this year."

Thought he admits that a little bit of help for the hair might give him a little extra power on Super Bowl Sunday.

"I think I'll run faster and hit harder and do everything I've got to do to beat the Saints," said Sliva. "I got it done and they say if you feel good you'll play good."
