Colts: Sanders out for the season
INDIANAPOLIS - Injury problems seemed to be behind Bob Sanders and Anthony Gonzalez just a week ago.

The safety had returned against the Rams and was ready to go against the 49ers, while the receiver, according to head coach Jim Caldwell, appeared ready to return to practice.

A week has made a big difference, because now both Sanders (Elbow) and Gonzalez (Knee) are preparing for more rehab after each has had or will have procedures done to fix nagging injuries.

IndySportsNation.com has learned the that Sanders has a torn bicep and will miss the rest of the season.

"He's gonna have to have something done," said Caldwell of Sanders, who visited Dr. James Andrews Thursday to check out the left elbow injury suffered against San Francisco.

Gonzalez has already undergone his arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Thursday in what the team said was a procedure to "clean out loose particles."

"We haven't gotten that yet," said Caldwell when asked about the length of time Gonzalez might be out. "Probably within the next couple of days, we will have it."

Caldwell did have an estimate of three-to-four weeks on cornerback Kelvin Hayden, who is out with a knee injury, meaning the Colts are now down to their backup cornerbacks following another injury revelation on Thursday. Cornerback Marlin Jackson will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, which Caldwell says happened during non-contact drills in practice.

This caught some off guard because Jackson was listed on the team's injury report as to not having participated in practice that day, but since the cornerback didn't take part in team drills, the team marked him out.

"We're by the book, we're are legal, we do exactly what the league requires us to do," said Caldwell of listing players as having participated or not participated in practice.

In any event, it's another tough end to the season for Jackson, who also tore his ACL midseason in 2008. The cornerback-whose been hindered by knee problems over the past month-made 10 tackles and intercepted a pass in four games this season.

"He's an extremely dedicated guy, loves the game of football," said Caldwell of Jackson. "The guy who has worked that hard to get back to have a setback is really tough and we all feel for him."

Add in the season-ending bicep injury to linebacker Tyjan Hagler, the Colts will have a collection of backups on the field Sunday against the Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium. Rookies Jacob Lacey and Jarraud Powers will join Tim Jennings and T.J. Rushing in sharing the duties at cornerback. In Hagler's spot, second year player Phillip Wheeler figures to get the starting nod with rookie Ramon Humber substituting in along with veteran Freddie Keiaho.

As he did in the first five games that Sanders missed, Melvin Bullitt will step into Sanders spot at safety.

"They are all fine, fine football players and great leaders and members of our team, so you're always going to look at a scenario that if you had them they certainly do give us some added bonuses in that regard," said Caldwell of losing the veterans, many who've already missed significant time this season. "The thing about it is that we've had young people step up and do a good job in their absence so we'll kinda continue on that path.

"Situations occur where sometimes you have to be called upon to do just a little bit more that you ordinarily do for a given game and this one will be no different."
